Liberty County

George Washington Dyer, Sr.

Civil War Veteran

George was born about 1830 in North Carolina and moved to Georgia sometime in his youth. He married Sarah Ann about 1855 in either Florida or Georgia. It appears that the family moved between Georgia and Florida a few times. Daughter Susannah was born about 1858 in Florida, son GW Junior was born early 1862 in Georgia and GW Senior enlisted in the Army at Gadsden County, Florida on May 5th, 1862. He joined Company “C”, 6th Regiment, Florida Infantry. The unit was organized at Chattahoochee, Florida, in March, 1862, contained men from Gadsden, Jackson, Union, Collier, and Washington counties. The unit moved to East Tennessee. Later it was assigned to Colonel R.C. Trigg's, and General Finley's and J.A. Smith's Brigade, Army of Tennessee.

During the battle of Chickamauga, Tennessee, George W. was struck by a minnie ball which traveled down his right arm and exited through his hand, causing him to lose use of that arm and hand. Due to his injury he was discharged about September 19 1863. After the war he and Sarah Ann lived in Florida, where the remainder of their children were born. In 1880 the family was living in Wakulla County, but by the 1890s had moved to Oak Grove, Liberty County. George and Sarah both die sometime between 1900 and 1910 and George is buried in the Rock Bluff (aka Oak Grove) Cemetery. Son George Junior, daughter in laws Mary and Katie, and grandson David are also buried in Oak Grove.
