Civil War Veteran
John T Brown was born November 25, 1845/46 in Randolph County, Georgia. On May 1st 1863 he enlisted as a Private in Company I, 5th Battalion, Florida Cavalry at Marianna, Jackson County. During the Battle of Ocean Pond (near Olustee, Baker County) in 1864, he was shot through his left leg. Even 45 years later, when he applied for his pension, fragments of fractured bone were still working their way out of his leg. In addition to the gunshot wound, John was thrown from his house a suffered a double-hernia of the scrotum, which limited his ability to work for the rest of his life. He served with 5th Battalion until the end of the war and was discharged near Jacksonville on April 14, 1865.
John moved to Liberty County in 1887, but does not show up on any census for the area. He was living in Bristol in 1909 when he applied for his war pension.
