The Florida Civil War Soldiers Big Database

About the Database

When you click on the link, a PDF document, 788 pages long, opens. It is a compiled database from several sources of soldiers that served in Florida units during the Civil War. Because it comes from many sources, most names appear at least twice. Oftentimes spelling variations of names also appear. For the researcher, these spelling varations are important to make sure that your search includes all possiblities. There's many reasons for names to have several spelling variations - they may been transcribed incorrectly from the original hand written document; the person who wrote the document spelled the name incorrectly; or the person whos name appears on the document wasn't sure of the spelling.

The database contains 42,482 lines (one name per line), so the best way to find the person you're looking for is to use the search function in Adobe. Enter the surname (as you know it) followed by a comma and the initial of the first name. This will get you in the ballpark. Be sure to check a few hundred names before and after the line that your person appears on to catch any documents with mis-spelled surnames, or the use of initials only for the given name.

What if they aren't in the database? They could still have served in a Florida unit, but perhaps their records were destoyed or lost. You might also check units in nearby states, such as Georgia.

If you have information on someone in the database that you'd like me to add, just email it to me.
