To all our Holmes county researchers.
A few days ago I went to Bonifay to do some research. I was told some disturbing and disappointing news which may or may not be news to some. For those of you who do not know, I am sorry to have to tell you that the Bonifay courthouse burned in 1902, and according to what I was told, everything was destroyed. I am hoping that somehow, some records were saved or archived. If any of you have any information on the fire I (and others) would be interested in learning more.
Therefore, some information from 1848 (when county was formed) to 1902 may be gone forever, this would include marriage records and other useful genealogical information.
This letter is a plea for information. If you, or anyone you know has any information during this time period we urge you to share with other researchers by donating your materials to the Holmes County site. Maybe some of you have access to family Bibles, or other records of interest. I am sure there would be many grateful researchers, myself included.
There is STILL much research to be done. One of my goals for Holmes County is to put census records online. THIS will take time, and lots of it, and volunteers. We have several who have volunteered, I have their names on file. If there is anyone else that would like to volunteer please write me or Melinda.
