Gilchrist
County History
On December 4, 1925 a bill was passed and signed
by Governor John W. Martin making Gilchrist County
the last and smallest county in Florida. Up until that time Gilchrist was known
as just the western portion of
Alachua
County.
Alachua County was created in 1824. So if
you have an Alachua County ancestor that dissapears from records about
1925, check Gilchrist County. And of course all records for
Gilchrist County ancestors before 1925 are actually Alachua County
records.
